Great way to end the semester


I wasn’t quite sure how much to trust the teaching staff when they said our class was going to get a lot better after the research article, but it actually did. This final module was a lot of fun. As an undergrad, most of my experience with science comes from going to classes in large lecture halls or performing the same experiment over and over again for my UROP supervisor. Coming up with a novel bioengineering idea from scratch was very different from most class assignments and helped remind me why I chose this major in the first place (definitely a necessary reminder while struggling through 20.320 and questioning my life choices). The research proposal was still a lot of work, but the work involved reading research articles about a topic I was interested in and brainstorming with my lab partner. 20.109 has been a really wonderful class (probably my favorite technical class I’ve taken at MIT). The instructors and TAs were amazing, and I think that the things I learned are going to be really useful to me going forward.

Learning how to write science

I really enjoyed Module 1! The topic was very interesting to me and I got to learn new techniques that I can use in the future. While I definitely gained new technical skills, I think I also greatly improved as a scientific writer. In high school I wrote some lab reports, but I never really appreciated the impact of clear and concise writing. 20.109 taught me that being clear and offering enough details without overwhelming the reader is very important when sharing your findings with the rest of the community.   At the beginning of the class I struggled creating a meaningful figure for the cell loading experiment with a descriptive enough caption without giving too much detail. After a couple revisions, I was able to significantly improve this figure and apply the feedback to the other figures I created for the data summary.  I still have a hard sometimes finding that balance between detail and conciseness, but I am looking forward to honing my writing skills in the com

Stress, Meme, Repeat

So the Module 2 paper turned out to be a very stressful series of cramming to finish up the paper after having a hectic week and getting triggered from my ptsd of writing research papers and literature reviews during an internship. Could I have planned far ahead and gotten the paper done the prior week? Like, maybe... but ultimately I ended up finally getting a chance to sit down with my paper a few hours before it was due (see meme 1) and the exhaustion of that week definitely just did not help with my productivity. I ended up taking Leslie's advice and utilizing the late day to really polish things up and also be less stressed about cramming to finish. This also gave me a chance to set up a meeting with Sean to get quality feedback on my final draft. Noreen's office hours were also a valuable resource that allowed me to get direct feedback on areas of confusion. So that's why people spend so long editing before sending their papers to journals

All I can think about right now is if writing a shorthand version of a paper with a partner was this difficult, how in the world am I going to write a full paper by myself? Oh well, I'll cross that bridge when I get there. All in all, writing this data summary increased my ability to understand other papers immensely. I used to look at a figure and read the title and read the caption and still not understand what in the world it was showing, but after making and interpreting my own figures I feel confident in my ability to evaluate the authenticity and accuracy of others. I wonder if I can apply that to other parts of my life? I don't understand how soccer players can have so much coordination with their feet, but maybe if I made my own soccer ball it will all fall into place.
